Harold "Hank" Stevenson, Jr. of Southampton, was introduced to trapshooting in 1968 by his then employer, Hall of Famer, Archie DiPaolo, who asked if he would like to "go shoot some clays at Pine Belt". Like many shooters, Hank started shooting with the shotgun he used for hunting; a side-by-side. He only shot two rounds that evening, breaking a12 & 14 and he admits, "I guess I got hooked that night as I have not stopped shooting since". Truthfully, there is no guessing about it because Hank joined the Amateur Trapshooting Association that same year and within two years, he came a director at Pine Belt SC. Hank credits his father as the person who kept him shooting and he believes that if "Dad" had not given him the inspiration and found the monies for entry fees, "I would not be here still in the game today." Harold Stevenson, Jr.'s shooting got better each year and at the 1971 Delaware State Shoot he proved it by winning the Handicap Championship with the high score of 98, bringing home the Open Champion trophy. In 1976, he was the winner of the "Jersey Cricket" and the coveted Cavalier "Rose Bowl" and at the Westy Hogans of '79, he won several trophies, topping the east's best shooters to capture the High Over All Championship on 800 targets. The most memorable times for Hank were his Veteran and Senior Vet wins at the New Jersey State Championships from 1990 thru 1994 and 1995and '96, respectively. Competing as a Vet i the Champion of Champions race at the 1990 Grand American, Hank finished third after posting a 99 and missing one in the shootoff. Two days later, Hank captured the top Veteran title in the Budweiser Handicap after smashing 97 clays from the 24 1/2 yard line. In this thirty-third year of volunteering his time and energy to our sport, Stevenson's good shooting may only be overshadowed by his service to shooters. Hank is currently a director of the Pine Belt SC, a position he's held continuously since 1970. He was also elected as President of the club eleven times from 1975 to 2000. He has served as a New Jersey State Trapshooting Association Director since 1988 and was elected President from 1988 thru 1991. Hank maintains membership with the Cavaliers shooting organization, served as President in 1986/87 and was honored at their 43rd annual tournament in October, 2000. He is a life member of the Pine Belt Sportsman's Club, Amateur Trapshooting Association and the National Rifle Association. Harold has earned a spot on the New Jersey Veterans Team every year sine it was established in 1999 and headed the Vet squad in 2000. At the end of the 2001 target year, Hank had registered 133,900 singles, 59,950 handicap and 32,450 doubles targets. Albert Streelman was born in June of 1900 and lived his entire life in Essex County, New Jersey until his death in June of 1973. Al was a member of the organizing committee, which brought together five shooting clubs: West Englewood GC, Yanataw GC, Passaic County GC, Elmwood GC and the West Milford GC, to form the original North Jersey Gun Club. He was instrumental in organizing and running their registered and non-registered shooting program in the 1970's at the end of his shooting career. Al was an active State Association member and held several elected offices through the years. Throughout the 1940's Al Streelman was a Trustee and Chairman of the Board of the New Jersey Trapshooting Association. He served as President in 1948, 49, and 50, was our state ATA Delegate from 1950 through 1954, and served several years as alternate delegate. Al was a staunch supporter and promoter of trapshooting and even made presentations during State Shoots, honoring fellow shooters. It has been reported that he belonged to nearly every gun club in the East, serving in the past as Tournament Committee Chairman of the New York Athletic Club. It is hard to believe that with nearly 40 years of contributing to the sport, Al was still able to find the time to shoot. In addition to winning the New Jersey State Handicap Championship in 1955 with a score of 95 and going 25 straight in a shootoff, Al also won trophies at surrounding state shoots and at the Grand American. A past President, High Chief and permanent board member of the Atlantic Indians, Al also won the Signal of Peace award and was a member of the 100 Straight Club. The 1965 New Jersey class championships were held in honor of Mr. Al Streelman and Mr. E. B. Springer. On April 8th, 1973, North Jersey Gun Club in Fairfield, scheduled a special shoot to honor Al, but, unfortunately, it was rained out and had to be rescheduled for June 10th. On June 5th, Al was hospitalized where he remained on the day of the shoot. To help cheer him up, shooters and friends signed a squad sheet with get well wishes which was given to him that evening. Sadly, Al Streelman, the club's last living charter member from when it was originally formed in 1934, passed away June 11th, just a day following his honorary shoot. A. F. Streelman registered 103,600 singles, 39,400 handicap and 4,948 doubles, had been Treasurer of the North Jersey GC for more than 30 years, and held that positi8on at the time of his death.
Lillian Niederer of Titusville, had little interest in trapshooting in 1959 when her husband urged her to attend trapshooting lessons at the local club that had been set up just for the ladies. With no prior experience she took a shotgun out of the gun cabinet and headed to the Blackrock Gun Club where the instructor advised her that her shotgun was for skeet. Within a year she decided to stick it out, joined the ATA and began shooting registered targets. That was 1960 and here's how well she's improved. Lillian is a 9-time NJ State Ladies Champion, winning that title four consecutive years from 1966-1969. She captured the Ladies Crown again in 1972, 1974, 1977, 1979 and 1981. In her 42 years of competition, Lillian has won a countless number of trophies. Lillian's shooting has taken her to many states where she continued her winning style by bringing home the Open Women's Crown for both singles and doubles. She has won nine Grand American trophies, her first back in 1966 when her 185 was good enough in the Class Singles for Women's Class C. In 1967, she won the Ladies Preliminary Handicap with a score of 97 which remains one of her most memorable shooting experiences. She was the Women's Class C Doubles winner at the 1969 Grand and in 1972 was Runner-up in the Champion of Champions event with a 99 plus 49 x 50 in a two-round carryover. After breaking 194 in the 1971 Class Singles event, Lillian went two round in a shootoff before being declared the Women's Class B Winner. Other Grand Doubles trophies came from Women's Class C wins in 1970 and 1977, and in 1971 and Women's Champion in a 1980 Preliminary Doubles event. Just a few weeks before the '69 Grand, Lillian cleaned up
at the Eastern Zone held at the Thurmont C&SC in winning five trophies.
In addition to Lady Champion and Lady runner-up in the Singles and Handicap
Championship respectively, she trophied in the Preliminary Singles and
was the Women's Champion in the Preliminary Singles and was the Women's
Champion in the Doubles. She won the All Around Class B titlewith 376
x 400 after going +37 in a shoot off. Lillian has fond memories of the
Pinehurst GC Annie Oakley Shoot at Pinehurst, NC and she should. During
the 1970's she won the Annie Oakley Title four times. Then in 1990, she
set the record with an unprecedented 5th Annie Oakley title which landed
her picture on the cover of Trap and Field. She also was the Lady Champion
of the Doubles Championship. Lillian Niederer's accomplishments extend farther than
just being a good shooter. She was the first Lady ATA Delegate from New
Jersey when shooters elected her to that position in 1979 and 1980. She
has been a member of several clubs over the years and is currently a member
of the Pine Belt SC and Pine Valley GC. Lillian is a member of hte NRA
and a life member of the ATA. She has been selected to the All American
1st team three times and the 2nd team eight times. Anyone who has had the pleasure of knowing Lillian is aware that she is always ready to help with anything to do with trapshooting. To prove it, ext time you're at Pine Belt SC just look at the drapes. She made them with help from some other club ladies. |
