Toots Tindal spent 50 years in the sport of trapshooting. She started shooting competitively in 1947 and by 1953 proved to be one of our finest lady shooters by capturing the NJ State Lady Champion Crown. Toots continued her winning ways by capturing the Lady Champion Crown seven consecutive years from 1953 to 1959, a record that still stands today. For nearly 30 years it was not unusual to see Toots and her husband, Charlie, refereeing and shooting at the Quaker City GC, NY Athletic Club, Atlantic City GC and the Westy Hogans. She loved the sport and continued to make friends long after her shooting career ended. Toots became the State Association Secretary/Treasurer and basically kept that organization running smoothly as the various Presidents served their terms. Cashiering at both Pine Belt and Pine Valley is what many of us remember though – her warm and caring smile as she greeted us at the counter. Referred to as New Jersey's "Mrs. Trapshooter" by some, the title seems very befitting to a fine lady whose devotion and seemingly untiring contributions helped make our sport in New Jersey what it is today.
Archie DiPaolo was born in Camden, NJ in 1921. He began shooting trap around 1939 and became an avid and accomplished shooter, winning awards at the various clubs he visited. He was an active member with the Pine Valley Sportsman's Club and was elected President. Archie was responsible for the purchase and rebuilding of the Burlington County Fish and Game Association, which later became Pine Belt Sportsman's Club, also known as "Archie's Place". Archie was President of Pine Belt three different times totalling eight years. He was also the President of the NJ State Trapshooting Association. Archie belonged to two other trapshooting organizations, the Atlantic Indians where he won The Horse, the Signal of Peace Trophy, their highest award with a handicap score of 98x100 from the 27-yard line and The Cavaliers where he served as President in 1973-74. Archie was the NJ Singles Champion in 1966 and won numerous titles in the Eastern Zone competition and the surrounding states. Archie continued his winning ways while vacationing in Florida. Archie and his wife, Divy, owned and operated The Red Lion Inn in Southampton where shooters gathered around the bar and dined in "The Shooters Room". Archie registered 156,000 Singles, 55,000 Handicap and 23,800 Doubles targets during his shooting career.
"Mac" McCarty was one of New Jersey's most prolific sportsmen and his contributions to trapshooting and wildlife conservation are unmatched to this day. Though not born in New Jersey, Mac did spend much of his life here finally settling in Piney Hollow, Gloucester County. His hunting quail and rabbit as a boy eventually led George to trapshooting. He quickly developed a reputation as a crack shot winning many major trapshooting competitions in the Eastern United States. (We have to just imagine what our sport was like back at the turn of the last century and how difficult it must have been just getting around the Eastern United States in order to compete.) In 1907 "Mac" traveled to Richmond,VA and carried off the coveted "Dixie" Crown then on to Boston to win the Boston Pale Face Handicap Trophy. Mac was also a familiar winner at Travers Island, NY where he won the New York Athletic Club Amateur Championship in 1908, 1909, 1921 and 1922. In 1923 Mac was the Eastern (Atlantic Division) Representative of the newly formed "Amateur Trapshooting Association" by December of that year Mac was elected the second President of the ATA and supervised the construction of the ATA's permanent home grands in Vandalia, Ohio. In 1942 at the age of 73 Mac won the HAA Trophy at Pine Valley where he was the President. At the age of 75 Mac won the NJ State Doubles Crown. Every year as a lasting tribute to Mac the ATA holds the George S. McCarty Handicap for his achievements and contributions. The ATA's first Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony included Mac back in 1969. |
